LOCATION -Auditions will be held at Northwest Vista College, 3535 N. Ellison Rd Sa, TX 78251 -Call Stage Manager, Aly Miller, at (210)771-1226 if you get lost! SYNOPSIS of PLAY: Set in the bohemian art world of downtown New York, this vivid and challenging drama explores the spiritual and emotional isolation of Anna and Pale, two outcasts who meet in the wake of the accidental death by drowning of a mutual friend. Their determined struggle toward emotional honesty and liberation—by no means guaranteed at the play’s ambiguous end—exemplifies the strength, humor, and complexity of all of Lanford Wilson’s work and confirms his standing as one of America’s greatest playwrights. PRODUCTION TIMELINE: Rehearsals begin in April and the show opens in May. |
Characters Needed: ANNA: Early to mid 30’s. A former professional dancer. Dry, contemplative, never one to wear her heart on her sleeve. She is coming to terms with the recent death of a close friend and a dealing with a relationship she cannot admit she has lost passion for; she is on the brink of an emotional meltdown. Looking for a dynamic actress in good shape with strong stage presence and excellent control. PALE: Early to late 30’s. A restaurant manager. Tough and abrasive, but ultimately an extremely sensitive man dealing with his brother’s death (and not well). He has the soul of an artist and a pessimistic, yet strangely beautiful sense of the world. Must have a good grasp of poetic dialogue. LARRY: Mid 20’s to mid 30’s. An ad man. A likeable, (not stereotypically) gay man with a caustic sense of humor and sarcasm. Looks for beauty and magic in a world he sees littered with media and unnecessary drama and hardship. Must have a wicked sense of comic timing. BURTON: Early to late 30’s. A screenwriter. Optimistic, trusting, and earnest, sometimes to a fault. Has a strong opinion on the world of entertainment, which he doesn’t enjoy watching go to garbage. Oblivious to the fact that his girlfriend Anna is no longer in love with him. Looking for an athletic type with a sharp sense of nuance. |

| The Elephant Man |
| Cameo Theatre with Fools Productions |
| holding open auditions for The Elephant Man (Mar 16-Apr 7) Prepare a 2 minute contemporary monologue SAT Feb 18 at 2 pm SUN Feb 19 at 2 pm or by alternate appt call 210 535 2241 |
The play chronicles the true story of John Merrick, treated first as a fairground freak because of his hideously, repulsively deformed body and later exploited more subtly by Victorian society. As a carnival attraction, Merrick is known only as ‘The Elephant Man’. Riots are started due to his repulsive looks. Eventually, Merrick is discovered by a young doctor, Treves. Treves provides him with a home in the London Hospital where Merrick is cared for well but also shrewdly used for fund-raising. Merrick is then introduced to high society and becomes perplexed at the often hypocritical Victorian values. Merrick soon develops a close friendship with an actress, Mrs Kendall. With his one working hand, he also manages to create an amazing replica of St. Phillip’s church. However, in the end, Merrick dies in his sleep due to the immense weight of his abnormal head. This story takes place from 1884 until 1890, mostly in London (with one scene in Belgium). The play questions the morality of European colonialism, the selflessness of charity, the relative importance of the spiritual vs. the physical, the rampant abuse of exploitation, and the merits of science vs. religion. please call 210 325 8702 for audition appt |

Please prepare one contemporary monologue, no more than 2 minutes in length. Claudia Shear's hilarious and touching play weaves together the rise and fall of Mae West, the legendary star of stage and screen, with the awkward romance of Jo and Charlie, two Mae West fanatics in present-day New York. The brash and outspoken Jo is an aspiring actress stuck in a cycle of temp jobs while Charlie, a meek and introspective soul, works in the film archives of the New York public library. Though seemingly polar opposites, both are striving for something they see in Mae—a confidence and finesse that made her into the extravagant, sexy, taboo-breaking public persona that was the hallmark of her fame. But Mae sacrificed much to maintain her public image. What are Charlie and Jo willing to sacrifice to become like her? |
Characters Needed: The role of Mae west has been cast. The role of Jo and Charlie plus various men in mae west's life would be double cast. Jo 20's-30s woman charlie 20's-40s man numerous men in Me West's life |
